Platinum jewellery is manufactured with a purity of at least 85 to 95 per cent, alloyed with small amounts of other metals to increase its hardness. Iridium, palladium, ruthenium, cobalt and copper are other platinum group metals that are alloyed with platinum to wear properties and adopt its working characteristics.

Platinum makes some demands on the skills of the jeweller. It needs casting equipment, high temperature melting and a clean working environment. To polishing technique, careful attention is required to gain the highly reflective finish that shows a diamond or other precious stone at its best.

It is very rare that Platinum jewellery is manufactured from100 per cent platinum as the pure metal is very soft. The platinum purity is always measured in parts per thousand nearly. Platinum-palladium alloys are mostly used in China and Japan. The most common alloys are Pt850/Pd, Pt950/Pd and Pt900/Pd. Pt900/Pd alloy is the choice of Japan that offers a good combination of workability, hardness and suitability for welding, soldering and casting. Pt850 is prefers by Chain manufacturers as its ductility and softness reduce tool wear and they are very well suited to the chain making process. Sometimes, Pt950/Pd is used in Asia and Europe for castings requiring fine detail.

Platinum-copper alloy systems provide many general purpose jewellery alloys for hand-working applications and machining. With some copper-containing alloys, casting can be tuff. The common compositions contain 30 or 50 ppt copper and sometimes in combination with 50 to 100 ppt palladium.

How you should care for your Sarees?

Sarees are a prized possession for any Indian woman. So, some tips for taking care of your expensive sarees are here.

1. Always keep the unwashed and washed sarees separately. Don’t keep once-worn saree back in wardrobe. If you want to wear the saree once again then you should maintain a separate place for keeping them, example: a chest or a drawer.

2. Hang your regular/ casual wear sarees in the cuboard but heavy sarees such as zari sarees with gold and silver embroidery or other such type of work should not be hanged in the cupboard. Just after wrapping them, keep them in folded position in some soft cloth or dupatta like those made of mulmul etc.

3. Do not wash Silk sarees. Dry cleaning is best for them.

4. Do not wash sarees in machines. For traditional Indian sarees, hand washing is best.

5. Where you place your banarasi or other silk sarees, keep moth repellent like naphthalene balls in the cupboard.

6. If you are starching your cotton sarees then always remember that no starch should remains are left on the saree. It can attract moths leading to destruction of not these sarees but other sarees also.

7. Use saree covers as far as possible to keep your sarees. But do not overload these saree cover boxes.

8. Do not keep soaked the sarees such as batik, bandhani sarees or other sarees which are dyed separately for giving designs as they may loose their color. You can handwash them with mild detergent soaps.

9. If your saree is of some fabric about which you do not know then ask the shopkeeper about its maintenance that whether it is washable or not? Whether it can be machine washed or needs hand washing? Other questions also like this.

How to Drape a Saree?

As we know that in many styles, Saree can be draped. Nivi style is the most common style of draping a saree which was originally common in Andhra Pradesh but now it has become the most popular style of sari draping all over India.

So, it is good to know the traditional sari draping technique.

Traditional Saree Draping or Nivi Style

Get a matching petticoat and blouse for wearing a saree. The petticoat should be of the same color as saree but blouse can be of contrasting color to give different effects to your saree.

1) First open the folds of the sari and then hold its inner plain end (This end is different from the other end which is the “pallu” of the saree). Into the waistband of the Petticoat, tuck this inner plain edge slightly to the right side.

2) From right to left, wrap around and tuck in the rest of the saree. The lower end of the sari should touch the floor. Before tying the saree, it’s better to wear your sandal so that correct length of saree can be determined while tucking it in.

3) Take the “pallu” now or the patterned end of the saree and measure it at about 1 to 1.5 meters. From your left, take it behind yourself and bring it in front of you from your right. It will leave the middle portion of saree which can be pleated into the waistband.

4) Over your left shoulder, fling the pallu to keep it out of the way while making the pleats of your saree.

5) At the right side, take the loose end of the saree where tucking in has been stopped and with your hand just start pleating the remaining saree into five to six inch wide pleats.

6) Now, hold all the pleats together. Just check that with the rest of the Saree all round, the bottom end is level and tuck them into the waistband of the petticoat. To the left of the navel, tuck the pleats into the waist and that must be turned towards the left.

7) The Pallu of the Saree which is lying on your left shoulder can also be arranged in 2 to 3 bigger pleats and pinned up with the blouse.
